Why Networking is the Lifeblood of Your Businesss

Networking is, indeed, the lifeblood of your business. The importance of making connections everywhere you go is crucial to the success of your business. In the beginning, especially if you are a service oriented business, you will be the sales and marketing team. It will be up to you to market your business everywhere that you are. It will be up to you to build that name recognition and brand awareness.

Have an elevator pitch and get some sales skills

Too many would be entrepreneurs fail because they seem to believe that they are not selling anything. That is a far too common mistake. You are always selling. You are always building awareness. The first thing you must construct is an elevator pitch. You must be able to tell someone, in 20 seconds or less, who you are, what your business is about, and how you solve problems. You need to write it out and memorize it. You need to practice it until it sounds casual and conversational. It is your big scene.

To be truly successful in networking, as well as in business, you will need some sales skills and training. It’s all about being likeable and building trust. People like doing business with people they like. If they like you, they will trust you. Sales is a serious art and you need to get those skills and practice them if you expect your networking efforts to pay off.

Join and be complimentary

There are many business groups and organizations that would be worthwhile to join such as your local chamber of commerce. There you will meet other business owners, get to know them and allow them to get to know you. There are also many other groups that you can reach out to from community organizations to trade and industry groups to church groups. You never know where business will come from and you never know just how wide a network some one else may have that may prove beneficial to you.

Try and establish certain alliances. Not with direct rivals but with those businesses that may compliment what you do. It will offer you the chance to reach out to a whole new audience of potential customers and clients.

Make a plan and be the plan

Never go to a possible networking function without a plan. Why are you going? How will your business possibly benefit? What do you need to come away with? It’s not really a social event so much as an opportunity to make connections and build brand awareness. Have some specific goals and targets and be able to measure your results.

Focus, friendly and follow up

You must stay focused and manage your networking efforts. Treat it like a part time job or like a division within your company. It must be structured and carefully managed. Focus on those people or organizations that you believe will be of benefit to your business. Do it in a friendly and helpful way. Always be ready to help. Always be ready to be that go-to person. Always set a proper example and never disparage any person or business; even a competitor. That builds trust.

Follow up any commitments you may receive during any manner of networking opportunity. You can’t let opportunities pass you by. Everyone is busy so you need to stay out front and be in their awareness.

Don’t be one of those entrepreneurs or business owners that never have a business card on them. It is more prevalent than you may think. Your business card is the most important piece of marketing that you have. It is what people will remember you by. Get them professionally designed and buy the best quality you can afford.
